Mileage is what matters most. A simple guide to choosing the fuel type that suits your driving, so you won't regret it.

The fuel question can divide families over Sunday lunch. But the truth is simple: there's no single best fuel, only the best fuel for your mileage and driving style.

Petrol: the safe bet for town driving

Cheaper servicing, and no worries about the particulate filter on short journeys. If you cover up to 15,000 km a year and mostly drive around town, a modern petrol engine is the sensible choice.

Diesel: for those who really do the miles

Diesel pays off from around 20,000 km a year and on longer trips — lower fuel consumption and smooth pulling power make long journeys effortless. Short stop-start town driving, on the other hand, isn't ideal, as it can clog up the DPF filter.

Hybrid: town driving without plugging in

A conventional hybrid charges its own battery as you drive and can cut fuel consumption significantly around town. You don't need a wallbox or to change your habits — you'll just be filling up less often.

Electric: the cheapest kilometre, if you have somewhere to charge

With your own socket or wallbox at home, you'll drive for a fraction of the cost of petrol. Without home charging, expect pricier public charging stations and a bit more planning. With a used electric car, always ask about the battery's condition.
